Prof. Dr. Metin Ekici was born in 1963 in Çal, Denizli, Turkey.
In 1984, He graduated from the Department of Turkish Language and Literature in The Faculty of Literature and Science at Atatürk University, Erzurum.
In 1985, Prof. Dr. Ekici became a Lecturer for Turkish Language in the Department of Turkish Language at Ege University, İzmir.
In 1986, Prof. Dr. Ekici was appointed as a Teaching and Research Assistant to the Turkish Folklore Program of the Department of Turkish Language and Literature in the Faculty of Literature at Ege University.
In 1989, while working as a Research and Teaching Assistant, Prof. Dr. Ekici successfully completed his M.A. in the Department of Folklore at Dokuz Eylül University, İzmir.
In between 1986-1990, Prof. Dr. Ekici involved in the fieldwork collecting project; "Collecting and Archiving the Oral and Written Folklore of Ege Region in Turkey."
In 1989-1990, Prof. Dr. Ekici became a Ph.D. student at Ege University, and upon successfully completing his Ph.D. courses at Ege University, he was elected by Ege University for Study Abroad Program.
In 1991-1996, Prof. Dr. Ekici became a Ph.D. student in the Department of Middle East Studies and Folklore Program at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, USA.
In 1996 Prof. Dr. Ekici completed his Ph.D. with the dissertation titled "The Anatolian Cycle of Köroğlu Stories."
In 1996, Prof. Dr. Ekici returned to Turkey, and, in 1997, appointed as an Assistant Professor to the Turkish Folklore Program of the Department of Turkish Language and Literature, in Faculty of Literature at Ege University.
In 1998, Prof. Dr. Ekici successfully passed the exam and become an Associate Professor.
In 1999, Prof. Dr. Ekici conducted a research on the Turkish minstrel stories and folk narratives at the Archive of Turkish Oral Narrative, at Texas Tech University, Lubbock, Texas.
In 1999, Prof. Dr. Ekici was appointed as an Associate Professor to The Department of Turkish Folklore in The Institute of Turkish World Studies at Ege University, Izmir.
In 2004, Prof. Dr. Ekici was appointed as a Full-Professor to The Department of Turkish Folklore in The Institute of Turkish World Studies at Ege University, Izmir. Since 2004, he has been working at the same position.
Since 2012, Prof. Dr. Ekici has been serving as the Chairperson of the Department of Turkish Folklore in The Institute of Turkish World Studies, and has also been serving as the Chairperson of the Turkish Language Department, at Ege University, since 2001.
In 2014, Prof. Dr. Ekici was appointed to the Director for The Institute of Turkish World Studies at Ege University.
Prof. Dr. Ekici is the author/Co-author of number of books and articles in Turkish and English. He has participated and presented papers at numerous international and national Conferences, symposiums, panels etc. He also conducted number research projects.
Prof. Dr. Ekici, has been serving as a Vice-chair of The Intangible Cultural Heritage Committee in UNESCO Turkish National Commission.
Prof. Dr. Metin Ekici has been the member of national and international cultural, educational, scientific and professional organizations: The Intangible Cultural Heritage Committee in UNESCO-Turkish National Commission (Ankara/TURKEY); The Research Institute of Turkish Culture (Ankara/TURKEY); American Folklore Society in the USA.
