THE ASIAN RENAISSANCE IN ECONOMICS, POLITICS AND TECHNOLOGY

 IN THE 21ST CENTURY

(CALL FOR SYMPOSIUM)

Esteemed Scholars,

Various elements of economic and political structures functionally and necessarily interact with each other in the modern world. That is to say, while the economic structures of countries affect the policies of states to a great extent, the economic structure itself is also affected by the states to a considerable degree. In this framework, while the discourse of ‘Atlantic Century’ is generally accepted for the 20th century in terms of economy and politics, can the expression ‘Pacific Century’ for the 21st century turn into a realistic definition?

As it is known, in the 19 th century, during the period of extraordinary economic growth, Britain was the hegemonic state in the world, while in the 20 th century, during the times of brilliant economic development, the USA was the leader. In the 21st century, the power struggle between the East and the West continues in the fields of politics, economy and technology. In this century, the US-centred liberal world economy has to defend itself in an increasingly fierce competition against rising Asia. The global trade networks concentrated in the centre of Asia are leading the world towards a multipolar world order in which not only economic power but also politics and competition are now more prominent. In other words, new global economic powers and political governments bring with them a more complex course of international relations.

The hubs of economic activities have experienced certain axis shifts in the last few centuries. Economic activities, which were initially centred around the Mediterranean, have shifted towards the North Atlantic and now towards the Pacific. The world economy is experiencing a significant transformation in the twenty-first century. As a matter of fact, according to purchasing power parity, Asia's share in global GDP, which was 45 per cent ten years ago, has reached 54 per cent today and is expected to be around 58 per cent by 2030 (World Economics, 2024). With a surface area of approximately 45 million square metres, the Asian continent has different political approaches, economic policies and an enormous cultural richness. Today, the region is returning to its prosperous days of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries and is at the centre of global trade networks. However, the income differences between countries within the continent can reach very large proportions and in this respect, it has a heterogeneous structure. However, under the leadership of China, Japan, Russia and South Korea, the countries in this region can create a complementary and interconnected ecosystem through mutual commercial interests.

According to the latest Mc Kinsey Company report, Asia now has a larger share of world order, technology platforms, demographic forces, resource-energy systems and market capitalisation than the rest of the world. Asia is now home to 13 of the 20 largest corridors of world trade by value. The Asian continent is also economically interconnected, as the region's share of Asia's total trade by value is around 60 percent.

The ‘Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement - RCEP’, signed by a number of major Asian countries, in particular China, Japan, South Korea and Australia, entered into force at the beginning of 2022. This agreement reshapes the economic and commercial architecture of the region and aims to establish a comprehensive and mutually beneficial economic partnership that will contribute to global economic growth and development in order to facilitate the expansion of regional trade and investment. Such regional agreements are redefining global trade in Asia. Both bilateral and regional agreements are closely related to the Turkic World and play a key role in strengthening inter-regional trade relations. This acceleration in Asia is likely to create a paradigm shift in the world economy and restructure the global economic and political hierarchy. It is of great importance for the Turkic States to take appropriate political, economic and technological steps in order to increase their share in this rapidly growing pie.

Based on the above-mentioned issues, it has been decided to organise a joint symposium with the cooperation of Ege University Institute of Turkic World Studies and Bukhara Innovation University in order to draw attention to the recent developments in the Asian continent and to address the issues on a scientific platform. In this context, the name of the symposium has been determined as “Asian Renaissance in Economics, Politics and Technology in the 21st Century” and the symposium will be held as hybrid (face-to-face and online) between October 31, 2024 – November 01, 2024.
